The graphics put a shine to this game unlike any platformer out there. Spyro The Dragon’s fully rebuilt engine means that this game looks amazing. Now that I have been very negative it is time to shed light on the positive things this game has to offer. The game is very easy to finish (minus the flight trial sections). Luckily for me, the difficulty of this particular game is not a factor. I’m merely doing it as a right of passage to say I’ve finished the three games of this trilogy. I’m personally feeling like it’s a chore to get through this game.

This isn’t the only part of the game that feels half-baked, the whole experience felt that way.

The quirkiness and originality of the later games are present within this game but it feels like it’s full potential is untapped. It seemed like enemies, friends, and NPC characters were unrealized. It took the next two games in this series to really bring the Spyro franchise to life. By that, I mean that this game feels like a hollow shell that wasn’t yet filled. This first entry is exactly what was used to build the next two games in this series. That being said, Spyro The Dragon has strengths of it’s own but many weaknesses that it doesn’t quite overcome. For this review there will be no nostalgia glasses I could be looking through as this is the first time I have ever experienced this specific game. I never played the original myself, only the two others in this trilogy. An admission of mine as I am writing my review for the remastered version of this game is that this is the only version of the game I have played. You start off being able to run, jump, fly, spit fire, and headbutt all enemies just as you remember it from the original game. The first Spyro game starts with what many remember to be the greatest assets to the series.
